The island of Cyprus is situated in a beautiful area of the Eastern Mediterranean to the south of Turkey and the north of Egypt. The island of Cyprus has been dived in two since a 1974 Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island, the Turkish Cypriots live in an area around a third of the island in the north and north east with the remainder of the island controlled by the Greek Cypriots. A United Nations buffer zone is between the two areas and in recent years it has been made possible to cross this area and visit the old port of Kyrenia or the walled town of Famagusta and excursions are on offer in the resorts.. The southern part of the island is still known as the Republic of Cyprus. The republic was proclaimed on the 16th August 1960 after independence from the UK, it is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the Council of Europe and the EU. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognised by Turkey.

The resort of Paphos is home to some of the best ancient sites in Europe and trips to these popular attractions are widely available, the nearby Coral Bay offers a beautiful sandy beach, one of the few on this side of the island. The eastern resorts of Protaras, and the lively Ayia Napa have some fantastic white sand beaches that are great for enjoying the warm sunshine or taking a dip in the cooling sea. All the beach resorts offer plenty of water sports, however Larnaca and Limassol are particularly good for diving enthusiasts with a number of caves and ship wrecks in the area.
Limassol and Paphos offer the best shopping for the resorts with international stores available as well as local and market stalls. The Troodos Mountains is a popular destination for a day trip and this can be combined with an excursion to the capital Nicosia, the only divided capital in the world, where there is a choice of shops or the chance to visit the border with the north which has opened in recent years allowing for trips to the Turkish side.
Accommodation in Cyprus is generally of a high standard and range from basic self catering to luxurious spa resorts that offer all the treatments. All inclusive has become particularly popular in recent years, however there are some great restaurants and Greek style tavernas offering typical Cypriot hospitality and delicious local and international dishes for you to enjoy.
