Great news for tourists who love a city break, Jet2 & Jet2holidays have just announced they are launching extra flights and city breaks to Budapest from Newcastle. This is the first time they will operate regular flights other than their popular Christmas markets programme. The flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays meaning three and four night breaks will be available between October 2025 and April 2026.
So to celebrate this fantastic news we have prepared a guide to Budapest for tourists...
Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Danube." This stunning city is known for its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and rich history, making it an ideal destination for holidaymakers and tourists alike. Whether you're exploring its historic landmarks or indulging in the local cuisine, Budapest has something to offer every visitor. Here’s your comprehensive guide to make the most of your trip.
Exploring Historical Landmarks
Budapest is steeped in history, and its iconic landmarks reflect this. Start your journey at the Buda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that serves as a stunning example of historic architecture. Visitors can wander through its gardens and enjoy breathtaking views of the Pest side across the river. Don't miss out on the Fisherman’s Bastion, with its fairytale-like terraces that provide the perfect spot for panoramic photos of the city.
Another must-see is St. Stephen’s Basilica, one of the largest churches in Hungary, which houses the mummified hand of the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen. Climbing to the top of the dome rewards you with yet another stunning view of both sides of the city.
Relaxing in Thermal Baths
One of the unique cultural experiences in Budapest is its thermal baths. With natural springs bubbling beneath the city, Budapest boasts a reputation for its historic thermal baths, such as Széchenyi and Gellért. Széchenyi, located in City Park, is one of the largest spa complexes in Europe, featuring both indoor and outdoor pools. Spending a relaxing afternoon soaking in these mineral-rich waters is a fantastic way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Savouring Traditional Cuisine
No trip to Budapest is complete without indulging in local flavors. Hungarian cuisine offers a variety of delicious dishes, with goulash being the star. This hearty soup made of meat, vegetables, and paprika is a must-try, found in many traditional restaurants. Additionally, be sure to sample chimney cakes (kürtőskalács), a sweet pastry that is a popular street food. Pair your meals with a glass of local wine or the famed Hungarian pálinka, a fruit brandy that packs a punch.
Navigating the City
Getting around Budapest is convenient, thanks to its robust public transport system. The city’s metro, buses, and trams make it easy to explore its various districts. Consider purchasing a Budapest Card, which provides unlimited travel and significant discounts on attractions.
If you prefer to explore on foot, a stroll along the Danube Promenade is recommended. This scenic walk offers views of the Parliament Building, Chain Bridge, and the stunning Buda Castle. The majestic beauty of the Danube, especially at sunset, should not be missed.
Experience the Nightlife
Budapest is also renowned for its vibrant nightlife, thanks in part to its famous ruin bars. The most well-known is Szimpla Kert, a unique bar set in a dilapidated building adorned with eclectic decor. Here, you can enjoy a local beer or cocktail while mingling with both locals and travelers.
In terms of entertainment, consider catching an opera or a performance at the Hungarian State Opera House. The stunning interiors and world-class performances make for an unforgettable evening.
Conclusion
Budapest is a destination that caters to every type of holidaymaker, whether you’re seeking history, relaxation, or lively entertainment. With its friendly atmosphere, rich cultural tapestry, and stunning sights, your trip to Budapest is bound to be an unforgettable experience.
